Why I Chose Adriana's Monologue from Shakespears 'The Comedy of Errors'

  1. This monologue is near the top end of my playing age and contrasts with 'Glass Eels' which is a younger character.
  2. I can relate to the text because of cirtain themes like how Adriana feels a lack of loyalty and cannot trust people. This piece really interests me because it is fun to play and explore, because she is such a forward character, in a sense that she is not scared to say what she thinks and feels.
  3. The  emotional journey of this piece shows a variety, starting with anger and frustration, then moves on to being scornful and criticle, followed by mockery and rediculing the person she is speaking to, and finally she is almost despirate and tries to convince the other character. Therefore this piece would show a range of different emotions as a monologue and contrasts to 'Glass Eels, this is why i chose it.
  4. This piece moves my acting skills, by a change in posture because Adriana is of a high court class, the use of imagination to create another character on stage, showing tension physically and vocally, and how I use my body, with hand actions to show her frustration, and my voice through articulation and breath control to show her status and emphasis her anger.
  5. My research helped with developing and creating a character by reading the whole play to see how she acts and reacts and reading reviews helped me to see what is good and what isn't in howshe is played. Seeing how she contrasts to other women in historical plays, it captured me into developing her further to be more bold.

Why I Chose 'Glass Eels' as a Monologue

  1. 'Glass Eels' works with my playing age of 17 - 23, because Lily is a teenager going through a confusing time and is confused with her sexuality
  2. I can relate to the piece, because Lily is in her teenage years and is going through a tough time, much like me. I can also relate to some of the themes raised, like the death of a family member and the effects of that.
  3. The emotional journey of the piece shows how Lily is remembering things about her mother at the start so she is a little happy and smily, then moved to upset, unsettled and tearful (I imagine), she is then very distressed and  even more traumatised, then finally wishing she could get ride of her memories and feels regret. Therefore this monologue shows a lorge emotional range and this is why i chose it.
  4.  Cirtain aspects like posture and the use of stillness help keep the piece moving. Some other aspects are; Use of imagination to create another character on stage, the clarity of my thoughts, how the tension changes during the piece through my vioce and physicality, the use of silence and holding the audiences attention during the pause, and how i physically use my voice and body, for example the use of breath to show distress or if i bring my knee's in closer to show the need for comfort and protection.
  5. My research helped me develop and create my character, Lily, by reading reviews on how she's played and about her relationships.
